The block (about 76 × 76 mm) and punches are hardened, tempered high-carbon tool steel. Each punch carries a sharp cutting face and a bevelled end for the mallet. Anneal your metal, keep it to 18 gauge (1.02 mm) or thinner, and use cutting fluid — the blanks then come away clean and ready for finishing.
